Welcome Summer 2018 DLINQ Interns

Summer is quickly approaching and the Office of Digital Learning & Inquiry is thrilled to have a number of student interns working on various projects throughout the next few months. For the next few weeks we will be featuring one student intern in the DIRT. This week will feature Nadani Dixon, a student intern from Middlebury College.



Nadani Dixon ’20 has been a part of the DLINQ family for the past year. She began with an internship last summer, continued working with the office through the school year and is back again for Summer 2018. Nadani is a rising junior studying Computer Science, Biochemistry and Gender, Sexuality & Feminism Studies who works closely with Instructional Designer, Sonja Burrows and Amy Collier on the Digital Pedagogy and Media team. As Instructional Design and Digital Pedagogy Intern, Nadani has worked on MiddART, an app for public art at Middlebury Museum utilizing beacon-based technology, MiddCreate Study Abroad Contest and Write Like a Scientist, a critical resource for scientific writers at all stages of training and experience, to name a few. She also researches MiddCreate, Middlebury’s Domain of One’s Own initiative.

Nadani has always been interested in technology and its pervasive nature but her interest was solidified last summer during her internship with DLINQ. She learned more about technology and its role in higher education; more specifically exploring critical questions and opportunities for digital learning at Middlebury. She never thought she would have been so comfortable and confident in an environment that offered more questions than answers but it was from this experience that she decided to major in technology. Of all the projects she worked on that summer, she was most intrigued with MiddCreate. MiddCreate allows Middlebury students, faculty, and staff to create a personal web subdomain. She explored the theory behind the concept and its pedagogical goals. In a blog post, she describes,  “To have a free space on the web was exciting for me. The opportunity to begin shaping a digital identity is like having a blank canvas acrylic paint on the side and appealed to my artistry and creativity.” She looks forward to what this summer internship will hold and anticipates how much she will grow during these next few weeks.

What do you do with your MiddCreate website when you graduate from Middlebury, and how much will it cost to keep it? Through a special partnership with our MiddCreate hosting provider, Reclaim Hosting, Middlebury students are eligible to have their domain and content migrated to a full hosting account at Reclaim Hosting for free for the first year.

This applies to students who are graduating (or have recently graduated), who already have a MiddCreate site that they want to keep. This special offer is good through July, 2018, and won’t be offered again until the end of fall semester, 2018. To get started, log into your MiddCreate dashboard. Then in the top menu bar, to go Manage Your Account > Migration InformationUnder the Migration Offer, click Get Started.

DLINQ Internship Reflection: Blog Post by Sarah Edwards

Last week, Digital Media Tutor and DLINQ Intern, Sarah Grace Edwards, published a blog post about her internship with the Office of Digital Learning & Inquiry last spring. She worked with Instructional Designer, Sonja Burrows, on the design and build of the ‘Portuguese at Middlebury’ digital hub. Sarah focused on several elements of the site development with particular emphasis on helping to grow a meaningful online community of practice space for Portuguese speakers and learners across Middlebury. The hub provides information about how students can participate in Middlebury’s diverse Portuguese programs and offers a place for Middlebury students across those programs to connect around their shared interest in the language, and where they can stay up-to-date with Portuguese/Brazilian culture and news.

Sarah shares that she went into the project not knowing what to expect as she didn’t know Portuguese and had limited web-design experience but was pleasantly surprised how these factors created such a valuable process. Sarah describes her experience with MiddCreate and the Domain of One’s Own Initiative. Not only did she learn and appreciate how empowering it is for students to have their own creative space and to integrate digital platforms into their college work but she utilized this concept in her own studies by creating her own domain for her final project. Sarah used her site to showcase her research on”Bromance and Masculinity” on campus.
