MiddCreate is an initiative at Middlebury that offers faculty, staff, and students their own subdomain spaces and easy installation of open-source applications such as WordPress, ownCloud, MediaWiki, Drupal, Known, Scalar, and Omeka, among others. MiddCreate users can decide what tools they want to set up on their domains and have full control over their applications. MiddCreate encourages users to take ownership of their digital identity as well as to develop the digital literacies that will serve them well throughout their academic and professional trajectories.
This week, we usher in our MiddCreate Spotlight series by highlighting a MiddCreate site created by Seo-Young Jun, a Translation and Localization Management student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Seo-Young was kind enough to answer some questions we asked her about her work with MiddCreate.
DLINQ: What is the purpose of your MiddCreate site?
Seo-Young: I wanted to create a portfolio website for my localization studies at MIIS, but I also realized that it is simply a great tool for blogging. Since my interest lies in media localization and film, I decided to blog about my general love for film on the side as well. I work at the Digital Learning Commons (DLC) at MIIS, and we were encouraged to make a MiddCreate website for our personal and professional use. Once I got on the platform, I noticed that we have a lot more creative control over how we can design and utilize our page in comparison to other website tools I have used in the past.
DLINQ: What apps did you install on your domain, and how did you create your site?
Seo-Young: I installed Jetpack and WordPress Activity for my plugins and the theme Hestia. The dashboard interface was quite easy to navigate so I just clicked around, went through some trial and error to test out how the page might look, and voila! I created my site.
DLINQ: What are your plans for further development on your site?
Seo-Young: I’d like to blog more not just for professional purposes but for pleasure as well. I’d love to keep on writing about films that I adore. I also have film and media works on my Vimeo page that I have produced in the past (and would like to produce in the future) that I’d like to feature on MiddCreate. And of course, since graduation is coming up, I’ll use this portfolio as a conversation starter with recruiters and potential employers.
DLINQ: What advice would you give to someone just starting out on MiddCreate?
Seo-Young: Don’t be afraid to experiment! Consider it as an online playground where you can surf around to try new things. There is no right or wrong way to go about creating your MiddCreate site. Just have fun.
