Scalar

Overview

Scalar is a free, open source authoring and publishing platform that’s designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form, born-digital scholarship online. Scalar enables users to assemble media from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways, with minimal technical expertise required.

Get Started

Scalar is available via hosted accounts with the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture (ANVC). To sign up, visit the ANVC website and click Sign Up.

Because Scalar is an open-source platform, you can also host your own instance of Scalar on MiddCreate. Log into MiddCreate using your Middlebury credentials, click All Applications, and select Scalar from the list of Content Management applications. Click + install this application to install Scalar.

Once your account is ready, you can Create Your First Book using Scalar.
