I returned to the Green Mountains,
Where I once found myself,
Lost among books and theories,
Wandering trails through hemlock forests.
I read of ideas that opened doors,
Of thinkers that came before,
Their wisdom passed from professor to student,
Like a candle lighting others, growing brighter.
I questioned everything they taught me,
Honing argument and scrutiny,
Not to dismissal or destruction,
But to separate truth from assumption.
I trod the same winding trails today,
Through early morning fog,
Memories emerge like gentle ghosts,
Whispering this is still your home.
Under starry skies we drank together,
Discussing life’s meaning,
Love, sorrow, beauty, solitude, death— All the while knowing we had time.
The years now make me sadder, and wiser,
With creaky knees and heavier footsteps,
Yet this place still feels timeless somehow,
Its rocky bones enduring.
So I rest here again today,
On pine needles under hemlocks,
Grateful for the ideas that took root,
And the young searcher I was.
I am a middle school teacher and quite familiar with ChatGPT. I decide to try Claude.
My original prompt and three subsequent requests for revision produced interesting details but I didn’t like to tone of an “ode.”
I decided to ask for the poem to be written in the style of one of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver.
It’s quite remarkable how a string of prompts can take you down different paths.
I think that poem turned out surprisingly well!
Maybe because I’m also Mary Oliver fan and was once a middle school teacher.
I will have to see how well it handles Marianne Moore.
Thanks for submitting!
I enjoyed this!
Less ‘syrupy’ (as someone else described one of their results)…did you ask for emotion or…?
Not familiar with Mary Oliver (or many poets…). Can you give an exmaple of how it emulated her style?
