Who benefits?

Teachers and students can benefit from AI for accurate and consistent evaluation of  performance based on declarative knowledge.

What concerns does this bring up?

The article raises several types of ethical dilemmas  associated with grading with AI

Integrity. Guidelines for the transparent and appropriate use of AI should apply not only to students but also to teachers.

Intellectual property. Student  papers are fed directly into  AI tools like ChatGPT that can  use such entries to train their algorithms on everything from patterns of speech to how to make sentences to facts and figures.

Professional standards. Because AI capacity for qualitative feedback is limited and less reliable, teachers must commit to provide personalized feedback over time for students to grow intellectually.

Additional comments

The article puts the onus on educators to be mindful professionals.  It was revealing how one professor compared the use of AI for grading as a teaching assistant who can do a decent job. Many educators do not  have the luxury of having teaching assistants do the grading work for them. AI capacity for feedback might be helpful to  reduce grading burnout in some educational settings.
Ultimately test design and content are much more important than the use of AI aided evaluation to set ethical  standards of teaching and learning. AI can only respond to what it is fed.
