How do I build community in a fully online course, when my students have never met one another in person? This is one of the most common questions and concerns that we hear from faculty about preparing online courses for fall. While it can be challenging to virtually capture the spontaneity of community-building that occurs in face-to-face classrooms and on a physical campus, there are numerous online avenues for cultivating community spirit. In this workshop, we’ll outline strategies for building community in online courses, sharing concrete examples. We’ll also touch on ways of building community at the program/department and co-curricular levels. We welcome participants to share their own successes and challenges in online community-building as well.
