What is Generative AI and How Does it Affect the Classroom?
October 4 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Wednesday, October 4, 2023
11am-12pm Pacific / 2pm-3:00pm Eastern
Online via Zoom
Have you been wondering about the hype surrounding ChatGPT (and other generative AI tools), but haven’t had a chance to try it out for yourself? Wondering how generative AI could or should be used in your teaching? In this workshop, you’ll have a chance to:
- set up your ChatGPT account
- explore how ChatGPT responds to a variety of prompts (bring your assignment prompts to see how ChatGPT responds to them!)
- identify issues with ChatGPT-generated responses
- explore models for discussing AI tools in your syllabus, ranging from considering its use as a violation of classroom principles to cautious adoption for certain tasks.
After exploring ChatGPT, we’ll talk about what we learned, and spend some time generating a list of assignments that are more difficult to use AI for, and the advantages and drawbacks of each of those assignments. We will also equip you with ways of explaining to students what exactly they miss out on in the language learning process when they use AI instead of drawing on their own resources.
