Middlebury: Historic Winter Glee

Amidst the ancient boughs, where history’s penned, Middlebury unfolds, a legacy to attend. Winter’s chill embraces the hallowed ground, As tales of knowledge and joy resound.

Old Stone Mill, a sentinel in the snow, Guardian of stories that continue to grow. Students, in scarves and mittens, convene, A blend of past and present, a wintry scene.

Beneath Battell’s granite, resilient and grand, Ski tracks etch stories in the icy land. Gothic spires reach for the winter sky, A bridge between eras, where memories lie.

Mead Chapel’s stained glass, a kaleidoscope, Illuminates the courtyard where scholars elope. Amidst the snowdrifts, laughter takes flight, In the heart of history, a vibrant delight.

Old Chapel, a time-worn guardian tall, Watches as sleds down ancient hills do fall. Winter’s whispers echo in marble halls, A symphony of past and present calls.

Around the campus, as icy winds swirl, Students carve joy in the winter world. Snowball fights and sledding down the slope, Blend with history, creating a harmonious trope.

The landscape, a canvas where stories unfurl, As skaters twirl around the frozen swirl. In every snowflake, a tale is inscribed, Of scholars and adventures, forever subscribed.

Middlebury, where the old and new entwine, In winter’s embrace, a legacy fine. Historic charm and students’ gleeful spree, A waltz of knowledge and winter, harmoniously.

I am an Instructional Technology Specialist (I coach elementary teachers on using technology in their classrooms) in a suburban-Boston school district – so this topic is of great interest to me!  I have been learning more about AI and how teachers can use it in their classrooms this year.  This was a fun activity and I am looking forward to more.

I began by asking Chat GPT: Write a poem for me about Middlebury College that captures it’s beauty and charm in the cold, snowy winter months.

But what I received was too formal and didn’t include anything about how students experience winter at Middlebury so I revised my prompt to:  That’s a good start, now add more about how students enjoy winter activities but be sure to mention that it is very cold.

I liked what I received but wanted to also capture the historic landscape and beauty of Middlebury.
So I promtped: I like it, can you add more about the historic landscape of Middlebury College?

The third result removed most of the student parts – so I asked ChatGPT to combine:
Now please combine the historic charm of Middlebury college with the students’ enjoyment of winter activities. Thank you!

And received my final poem.

Thanks for providing this activity!
